Crews with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) are at the site of a sewage overflow that occurred at a manhole located on the property of Missouri Baptist College of St. Louis.

Early this afternoon an employee of Missouri Baptist College discovered that a manhole located on the property was overflowing.  The manhole is located near College Park Drive in Creve Coeur.  MSD crews were called in to investigate the overflow and once they arrived they found a sewer line was blocked with roots.

The crews were able to clear the roots from the manhole, but about 700 gallons of sewage overflowed from manhole into nearby Smith Creek, which runs along the Rossman School property.  The overflow has been contained and cleanup is currently underway. It is not yet known at this time how long the manhole had been blocked.  Cleanup efforts are ongoing and should be concluded within the next 48 hours.

MSD crews will continue to work throughout the night and into the morning cleaning up the sewage overflow.

MSD is placing warning signs in these areas, advising the public of the overflows.  While there is no immediate threat to public health or safety, the public is asked to heed the signs and avoid contact with the affected areas.  If a member of the public should come in contact with these areas, they should immediately and thoroughly wash with soap and water.

The sewage overflow was reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, as required by law.
