This pilot project is currently underway in select areas of St. Louis. The goal of this project is to eliminate improper connections to the sanitary sewers. This video shows what improper connections from homes, businesses and industries connected to the sanitary sewer system look like. An improper connection can increase the overall volume of stormwater in the system during periods of heavy rain, which can cause basement backups and overflows into streams, presenting both public health and environmental problems. Eliminating I & I reduces risks to both public health and the environment, and helps protect against property damage.
