Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District

MSD’s responsibilities include the interception, collection and treatment of wastewater, as well as stormwater management.

This is a list of some of the things we do at MSD:

  • Minimize overflows
  • Minimize basement backups
  • Maintain and rehab infrastructure
  • Maintain and rehab storm sewers

MSD does NOT build stormwater or wastewater sewers for new development. That infrastructure and its initial cost is the responsibility of developers. Once they are finished building that infrastructure, it is deeded over to MSD and we assume responsibility for its maintenance and operation. When existing sewers need to be replaced, we then do construction and rehabilitation.
