Residential Customers with Water Meters

For customers with water meters, MSD charges in direct proportion to each customer's water usage, as measured by the customer's meter. The metered water usage method of determining sewer usage is a standard practice recognized by other sewer utilities.

MSD understands that not all metered water usage is returned to its sewer system and has made allowances for that event. Residential customers' water usage is based on their winter quarter water meter reading. Generally, the water that is used during that season is not used for lawn sprinkling or other outdoor purposes. MSD also makes provisions for commercial enterprises that may package water in their products, irrigate large parcels or lose water through evaporation in boilers and air conditioners.

Water that is returned to the sewer system and is the basis of the sewer charge is referred to as "Contributed Volume."
